Professor Carole-Anne Upton is Pro Vice-Chancellor and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Creative Industries at Middlesex University and PVC for Research and Knowledge Exchange. She has taught drama and theatre in higher education for more than 25 years. Her academic career in Drama began with a lectureship at the University of Hull, leading eventually to her appointment to the Chair in Drama at the University of Ulster. Her main areas of interest are contemporary performance and directing and she has published research on Irish and Northern Irish theatre as well as francophone theatre. She was founding editor of Performing Ethos, an international journal on ethics in theatre and performance. Drawing on a background in languages, she has a longstanding fascination with the practical processes of translation and theatre-making and the interplay between them. She is a practitioner as well as a scholar, teacher and now senior manager in HE and still occasionally enjoys exploring creative possibilities with other people in the rehearsal room, whenever the opportunity arises. She has one daughter and two dogs and enjoys running and cycling.
