Ryan Murphy

Ryan Murphy is a highly accomplished musical director, composer, and educator with nearly two decades of experience shaping the landscape of musical theatre performer training. Known for his expertise in ensemble singing, harmony work, and voice development across both contemporary and classical styles, Ryan has dedicated his career to nurturing the next generation of performers. 

As the architect of the innovative BA (Hons) Musical Theatre degree at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, Ryan created a curriculum that merges industry practices with academic rigor, offering students a drama school-standard education at a fraction of the cost. Under his leadership, the program garnered widespread acclaim, achieving remarkable student satisfaction scores and produced graduates who have gone on to train at prestigious institutions and perform on international stages.

Ryan holds an MA in Musical Theatre Composition and recently completed a practice-based PhD in narrative-driven orchestration. His doctoral work, The Olympus Suite, explores the retelling of Greek myths through programmatic music, showcasing his ability to merge storytelling with intricate musical craftsmanship. His compositions have been praised for their emotive power and their capacity to bring timeless narratives to life.

In addition to his academic achievements, Ryan has worked extensively as a musical director and singer, collaborating with industry professionals to deliver high-quality productions. His approach to performer training emphasises the power of ensemble work, fostering creativity, precision, and confidence in aspiring artists.

Ryan is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) and continues to engage in academic research. He is thrilled to join LAMDA as the Course Leader for the MA/MFA Musical Theatre, bringing his passion for innovation in musical theatre education and his commitment to excellence to one of the UK’s leading drama schools.
