About the course
This in-depth weekend course is an invaluable opportunity to spend some deep and dedicated time working on your British accent(s). Designed for professional working actors, you’ll be guided through the technical aspects of creating a British accent, before moving on to discovering how to sit in and embody the accent as your own.
You’ll be encouraged to find truth, connection and ease over perfection and impersonation, and you’ll finish up the weekend with a reliable British accent(s) you can be confident in.
LAMDA is the UK’s oldest drama school and voice and accent work has always been a part of our training. Accent-teaching at LAMDA is a positive tool students can use to create character, rather than trying to change their own unique voice. As such, you’ll be encouraged to enter into accent work with a sense of play and curiosity, on a quest to find the truth rather than the outcome of the accent, learning from and sharing with each other over the course of this inspiring weekend.
What will I learn?
- General accent technique, progressing into the specific technicalities of key British accents.
- Develop an understanding of the range of British accents and their applications.
- Learn how to embody a British accent: getting comfortable and confident through play and release.
- Discover how to develop and inhabit your go-to British accent(s).
- Professional consolidation: receive guidance on your next steps: how to apply your learning to your professional practice and how to utilize your British accent(s) in a professional context.
Is this course for me?
This course is for professional actors, who would like to build upon their existing British accent or toolkit for developing accents, as well as those who have not tried a British accent or any formal accent training prior to now.
Our tutors are adept at providing bespoke feedback and challenging the individual within an inclusive group setting.
Our professional level classes give you an opportunity to invest in yourself and your professional practice. Taking part in these classes is a way to connect (or reconnect!) with the joy of acting. It’s a place to experiment, play, and make new discoveries.
Further Information
We are thrilled to be offering LAMDA’s British conservatoire-style actor training outside of London for the very first time. We are a truly global drama school, having been ranked 6th by the Hollywood Reporter in its 2024 list of the best drama schools in the world. With many of our alumni being from the USA, and going on to work in the States, New York City was a natural fit to be the home of our first international studio.
Our hope is that LAMDA NYC can be a hub for US-based LAMDA graduates to continue to train, and for those new to LAMDA to experience our work. We look forward to expanding our studio class offerings, and to bringing a slice of LAMDA training to the Big Apple.
