About the show

Queen Elizabeth I, the only unmarried woman to rule England.
She reigned for forty-four years. Mastermind. Seductress. Survivor.

This play created by award-winning writer Ella Hickson shines candlelight on the ways and means by which women in power negotiate patriarchal pressure in order to get their way.

This is an amateur production by arrangement with Nick Hern Books.

Caroline Leslie is the Course Leader for MA Directing at LAMDA.

In 2023, she directed Bleak Expectations at the Criterion Theatre. Her acclaimed production of The Wipers Times, by Ian Hislop and Nick Newman, enjoyed two West End runs at the Arts Theatre after an initial production at The Watermill Theatre and two National Tours. Her sell-out production of Trial By Laughter was at The Watermill Theatre and also had a National Tour.

Ella Hickson is an award-winning writer whose work has been performed throughout the UK and abroad. Her play Oil opened at the Almeida Theatre in October 2017 and her recent show, The Writer, opened there in Spring 2018. In 2011 she was the Pearson Writer in Residence at the Lyric Theatre Hammersmith. She is developing new work for the National Theatre, the Old Vic and the Manhattan Theatre Club as well as various projects for TV and film.

Ella was a Thornton Wilder Fellow and has twice been a MacDowell Colony Fellow.

This play contains strong language, some violence, open flames and blood.
